This is the only web site that I have been able to find about the 39th engineer battalion. My E mail is fbfd@gibsoncounty.net I am the chief of a volunteer fire dept and I am using the departments address. I am a novice at a computer and am just feeling my way along. CommentsHey Richard, glad to see you have been adding to your site. You are doing your part to help bring us all togeather again. I enjoy so much your photos. For those of you who find this and do not know me, I am John Barden and I served proudly with the 39th in HHC from Jan 1968 to Jan 1969. I was in charge of the generator shop in the Engineer section of Bn. Maint. I replaced Bob Hobert. I am also secretary of the Alumni group that was elected at our first reunion to plan the next reunion in 2003. We are also turning out a news letter several times a year thanks to Gale Helser. If anyone served with the 39th Engineer Battalion or attached units in Vietnam and would like to recieve a copy of the news letter please contact me. The news letter goes out to those off line also. We do need your help with stories, memories, photos ect. that will help build interest with-in our group. I encourage you to help us. Links to our Yahoogroup are here on Richards web page. Thanks to GW for starting and managing the Yahoo.com group. Please join the group and post on the message board. I can be reached at jbflaco@yahoo.com and jbflacolaredo@aol.com. CommentsGood God........ In the time frame of about an hour , I had a thirty-five year " flashback ". I read and reread every printed word , and comment , made on this site . Viewed all the photos , for fear that I would miss something , or someone . Lots of memories......even more emotions.......! My name is Wade Johnson , I was fortunate enough , to have served , with the Thirty-Ninth , from Jan. 1967 to Jan of 1968 ( Co. " D " ) . I was one of those from the 36th. Engineer Battalion , from Ft. Bliss , Texas that shipped over as a battalion . To relieve and replace , some of those , that may have still been around . And came to be , in country , from Ft. Campbell , Ky. As I read the presented accounts , of the many that served . Not only from my own company " D " , but from Hqs , A , B, and C , and with a time span of as early as 1965 , to the latest dates I read , that where in late 1971 . Without a doubt......every one of us , should hold our heads high . And be proud to have served , and made history , with the greatest Army . Questionabably then......but most certainly now . In the annals of world history. " But least we not forget , those of our brethern , who have made the supreme sacrifice " Wade Johnson that replaced

CommentsGreat site. I was in Task Force Frazier at Baldy in 1968. I did refrigeration repair and kept the food cold and the morgues running. I found one of my buddies Bryant Strickland's name and e-mail. I have not been able to contact any others. I would love to find Captain Frazier. He was the best officer I ever met. Your pictures of the scenery and the mine sweeps brought back a lot of memories. We were located next to the ammo dump north of the airstrip. I flew out to all the LZ's in the area. I was at Ross a lot patching up reefers. Thanks for sharing.

CommentsRichard, Great site... I was a Chinook pilot. 132 ASHC (Hercules) and went to Duc Pho many times during late 1968 and most of 1969. We were based in Chu Lai and used Duc Pho as a staging area for the nearby LZ's. I think it was the hottest place I've ever been and surely the worst place I saw to be based. Had a lot of pretty decent lunches there.. Thanks for the memories. Darryl Dickie darryldickie@earthlink.net

I was then transfered to HHQ company when one of the pay clerks rotated home. At this time the 39th was stationed north of Chu Lai just outside of a small village called An Thuon. Around Sept. or Oct we moved the entire unit to the backside of Mac XII Marine air base we sat right off of highway 1 and the airfield to our back. I was then transfered to Co D. Headed south to LZ Dottie. We were at LZ Dottie during the Tet offensive in 68. It is great to see something about the 39th Combat Engr unit. It has gotten lost in all the shuffle during the formation of the Americal division in Nov of 67 I hope to hear from some of the guys that where either with HHQ Personnel, or Co. CommentsSteve Brill here. Great web site. I was in HHC, 39th Combat Engineers from November 1970 to December 1971. The unit stood down in October and November 1970, with most people reassigned or sent home. I remained, moving up to 45th Group HQ in Da Nang, and became mailman after we discovered several bags of unforwarded mail (I had been in S3 Operations). It took me a couple of weeks to take care of the mail - hope everyone got their stuff. I remember driving my boss down to Quang Ngai to visit Co. B, and the effort to put up some buildings and a road that wouldn't wash out near My Lai. I also remember driving up to visit Co.D near Tam Ky - I think they were fixing routes 531 & 535. The MPs at Chu Lai would let us bring up Igloo coolers that we filled with cans of soda and ice and brought out to the work sites. The S3, Captain Silvernale, was cool about that, and even helped pay for the soda and ice. Hi to John Sester, Terry Studley, Mark Crawford, whereever you are. And hi to Hugh Silvernale, a decent guy for an officer. steve.brill@ecolab.com

Many memories are still as vivd as the day they happened. I really remember the red laterite soil that permiated my skin so bad that when I went on R&R I had to endure three steam baths and three tub baths before I was considered clean enough. I still left a ring after the third tub bath. I also remember how slippery the red mud was when it rained. I was also in one of the largest convoys, if not the largest, to leave Cam Rahn Bay. CommentsAs I remember it, the three pics of the blown up 5-ton on Route 535 were from a booby trapped bomb. I never went on mine sweep with A. Co. so... how come I can say I was standing about 20 feet from thet truck when it went up? The driver lost an ear and had some minor burns. The worst injury was a SSgt that got soaked with burning diesel fuel when the tanks on the truck went up. Myself and another rolled him on the ground to put out the fire. We had taken a break to eat a bite, and I was facing away from the truck eating c-rations when I found myself flying thru the air, landing running away from the truck, c-rations still in my hands. Since we were a long ways from Baldy here, and we didn't always get all the way there on mine sweep, I believe we had to leave that truck there for several days. The bit about A. Co., I can't remember. Bob Daniel Medic HHC/D. Co. 02/67 to 01/68

CommentsBeen back to Vietnam several times and the last time was this past month, May 2004. I have several pictures of the area you fellas were at and a amateur video that I took. I'm not sure where Duc Pho is but I was around LZ Baldy and LZ Center for several hours driving around taking pictures. About an hour south of Hoi An, and about 20 miles due west of Hwy.1 where most of my pictures were taken. The map I have is over thirty years old and the area has changed tremendiously so you can't rely on those old maps any longer. If you want to contact me, just call or write to my email address. Curtis Gilliland, Somerset,Kentucky 606-678-9949 My email address is saigon42503@yahoo.com
CommentsI am going to have to correct myself on those recent pictures of the area around Duc Pho. When I looked at a recent map a few minutes ago, I noticed that the LZ Baldy, spoken of on your website, it is a different Baldy than the one I was visiting. This one is north of Chu Lai and Tam Ky. The pictures and video I have taken are as I said just an hour south and about 30 miles west of Hwy. 1 today. I stand corrected. Curtis Gilliland, Somerset,Kentucky

CommentsThanks for taking the pictures and posting them. For various reasons, the pictures I had are no longer around. The years have a way of making the memories fade and I appreciate getting to see "the real thing" again. I was in Viet Name from October 1968 to October 1969 and again September 1970 to August 1971. I flew an O-1 from Chu Lai. Our company was the next building south of the USO that you photographed. My wife was a nurse at the 27th Surgical Hospital and later the 91st Evacuation Hospital, both at Chu Lai. Her one tour was from August 1970 to August 1971. We adopted a Vietnamese orphan in 1975. I remember LZ Baldy. I stopped to have lunch there once. The mess hall had a built up area where the officers could sit and look down at the enlisted people. They even had some poor guy working as a Dining Room Orderly (DRO). He took food orders from the officers and brought them their trays of food. I left and flew elsewhere to eat lunch. I couldn't believe that in the middle of a combat area there was such egocentric arrogance and stupidity. I wanted to walk around the mess hall apologizing to the soldiers but I knew they had to continue living under the rule of those officers. I retired from the Army Reserve with almost 30 years in uniform. I have to grudgingly admit that today's Army is better than we were in Vietnam, but I could never be prouder of anyone than I am of the soldiers of Vietnam. Men who started in an Army that paid $76 a month, suffered in a miserable war, and came home to a hostile country. Nobody ever gave more for their country than they did. God bless you all, and just in case nobody said this to you before, "welcome home".

Some times it feels like a million years ago and sometimes in was this morning. Wanted to go to the reunion but was sick and doctor said no traveling from mid June till early August. It looks like a lot of the guys did make it there and I don't remimber any of them being that old (but then I got a lot of gray hair and wrinkles to) Sure would have been nice to make that reunion. If another reunion is ever planned, please let me know. I am Harvey Blair at Blair@cybermesa.com Good-by for now

CommentsI served as company medic Spring and Summer of 71, Have trouble remembering names but never forgot the events. I Think I remember Baily, He was driver whose Proof truck hit a mine, the only other one I remember from Kentucky, he got his hand blown off when a VC threw a grenade in in his Road Grader on the road to LZ Young, I rememberd that the Casualty was from Island Kentucky, but like I said the names are all a blur and we had several men get seriously wounded from mines and other attacks. the site brings back a lot of memories. CommentsTHANX FOR THE MAPS OF CHU LAI AND LZ BALDY. I WAS IN COUNTRY JUNE '67 - MAY '68. I WAS PART OF A PLATOON OF COMBAT MP'S WITH THE 196th LIGHT INFANTRY BRIGADE. WE PULLED RIVER PATROL NORTH OF CHU LAI AND I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE BOONIES TO GO OUT ON PATROLS, SWEEPS,SEARCH & DESTROYS WITH THE INFANTRY. I SPENT MANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS AT HILLS 69,63,406,488,LZ BALDIE,CAMP EVANS,CHU LAI AND TAM KY. I REMEMBER LEAVING CAMP EVANS IN MAY '68 THINKING OUR HEAVILY LOADED C-130 WOULD NEVER MAKE IT OFF THE GROUND. WE WERE BEING ROCKETED BY NVA REGULARS OPERATING IN THE MOUNTAINS JUST TO OUR WEST (EDGE OF AUSHAU VALLEY ). PIECES OF THE RUNWAY WERE BEING BLOWN UP AND HITTING THE SIDES OF THE PLANE WHILE WE WERE TAXING TO AND GOING DOWN THE RUNWAY. I REMEMBER THE CREW CHIEF SCRAMBLING TO GET THE TAIL RAMP UP IN TIME FOR THE C130 TO LIFT OFF.YOU COULD SEE THE RUNWAY TO THE REAR BEING HIT AND PIECES FLYING EVERY WHERE. I WAS SANDWICHED BETWEEN A JEEP AND A 75 MM HOWITZER THAT WERE BARELY TIED DOWN. WHEN WE GOT IN THE AIR EVERY GRUNT ON BOARD LET OUT A GREAT CHEER AND APPLAUSE FOR THE CREW. WELL, THANX FOR LISTENING.BOB HITCHNER ( HORRIBLE HITCH ) bobhitch320@hotmail.com

I served with Charlie Co. during 67 & 68. I stumbled
on to your web site by accident while trying to find old maps of South Viet
Nam
to see where I spent my time. The maps were for tourists which didn't fit my mind frame of the country much less help me locate any of the LZ's I was at. I decided to look under Americal Div., 39th CBT Engrs & low & behold I found your web page, at the bottom of a page I saw the name of one of my hooch buddies (Joe Dooley). As I looked thru your pictures I found pictures of guys that although I had not forgotten they had surely been placed on the back burner. This morning I dug out a box of letters & pictures that I hadn't seen in many years, I have been on the computer communicating with Dooley all morning & now going into the afternoon making it seem like it was only yesterday that we were all together. I was a heavy equipment operator with Charlie Co.(bull-dozer) but also drove a 5-ton dump & did a little mine sweeping. Looking at your pictures made what we were doing over there seem a little more worthwhile in my eyes now. I was drafted which didn't make my attitude none for the good as far as the military was concerned, I did my job, covered my butt & tried to the best of my ability to do the same for the men that were around me. Your site gave me & hopefully my family a sense of what we were really there for! I remember Snipers Gap, the Monsoons & the people that I grew to distrust almost instantly. Your site is real good & it is disappointing that spam has made you close it down, I would be proud if you could add me to the list of those who found you sooner & maybe someone will see my name as I did & make contact with one of us. I have pictures but am not sure if I will be able to scan them where they are of the quality that you have posted.
God Speed & Thank-You for your service.
Sincerely,
William L. (Bill) Ray
